The most numerous and structured social organization of Cherkasy region is the Federation of trade unions. The decision about its creation was issued on 21 January 1954 by the Secretariat of the all-Union Central Council of trade unions in connection with the formation of Cherkasy region. The first between the allied trade unions conference of Cherkasy regional Council of trade unions took place on 18 March 1954. 11 regional Union committees on production principle were established. In the Soviet period, the trade unions have done a lot to improve the material situation of workers, working conditions, housing, and many other problems. Significant achievement of those times is participation in the development of state and local standards in working conditions, which in the 80s were formed into a coherent system, implemented through the certification of work vacancies of enterprises.

As of 1 January 2014 the structure of trade unions Federation of the region consists of 19 regional branches, 3 united organizations of trade unions, uniting almost 3 000 primary trade union organizations. These are the regional trade union organization of motor transport and road facilities workers (Zhigaylo P.S.), agricultural industrial complex (Kaschenko V.M.), construction and construction materials industry (Kulenko J.V.), public institutions (Kuchugurnaya K.L.), power engineering and electrical industry (Moldovanov O.B.), housing and utility sector, local industry and consumer services (Аnashkevitch I.V.), culture (Marshtupa V.V.), forestry (Opanasyuk N.A.), machine builders and instrument engineers (Mikolaenko P.S.), education and science (Zhaldak D.U.), health (Kochubey V.G.), consumer cooperatives (Rudenko N.M.), textile and light industry (Marchenko N.I.), workers and entrepreneurs in trade, catering and services (Yurovitska R.I.), the Cherkasy branch of the OJSC ?Ukrtelecom? (Chernich O.N.), Cherkasy Directorate of the Ukrainian state enterprise of posts ?Ukrposhta? (Solopova I.V.), food industry (Sirotenko P.S.), chemical and petrochemical industries (Shepel V.P.), the Pension Fund of Ukraine (Nochovnick T.A.), social sector (Veselovskaya L.V.), road construction (Ovcharenko G.Y.), the United trade Union organization IN the ?Orizon? (Pogonin S.A.).

All regional professional associations are authorized organizations for a social dialogue and are representatives of the workers interests at the brunch level.

In different time period the Association of trade unions of Cherkasy region was headed by Orlov O.S. (1954-1956), Radomski S.Y. (1956-1957), Miroshnichenko I.P. (1957-1962), Pidenko V.I. (1963-1964), Konotop G.P. (1965-1973), N.A. Morozov (1973-1976), Skvorec V.V. (1976-1990), Tovstopyat V.I. (1990-2005), Shevchenko P.V. (December 2005).

A constructive position of the trade unions allowed taking the leading place in civil society, working effectively for the improvement of social and labor relations.

The main activity of the trade unions and the most effective mechanism of social dialogue, the protection of social and economic rights of citizens is the conclusion of collective agreements.

In the region was signed a Regional agreement between the state administration, Association of employers and the Federation of trade unions. There are 6 brunch and 22 territorial agreements. By collective agreements are covered almost 90% of employees. This level corresponds to the coverage of workers by collective agreements in the EU.

Representatives of trade unions are represented in the Advisory bodies of Executive power, various councils and committees, at the meetings of which are considered actual issues of labor relations, employment, payment of wages, safety, health improvement of workers and children. Authorized members of trade unions take part in the investigation of industrial accidents and oversight of compliance with labor legislation. Free legal assistance to members of trade unions and representative in courts is given.

There is an important role of the trade unions Federation in the management of social security funds. So, due to the position of trade unions in recent years, was substantially increased spending on pensions, health resort treatment of employees and children, maintenance of the resorts recreation centers, sports schools, payments to victims of industrial accidents, benefits in case of loss of employment while reducing the number of employees or liquidation of enterprises.

On the initiative of the trade unions Federation at Executive bodies tripartite has been created social dialogue councils, at the meetings that address the questions of economic activity of enterprises, the work of communal services, employment, filling the local budgets, payment of wages, rehabilitation and recreation of children. The practice of implementation of trade Union initiatives improves by introducing them to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, people?s deputies from the Cherkasy region.

Another important project initiated by exactly Cherkasy Federation is prevention of HIV/AIDS in the workplace, which is implemented with the support of the International labor organization at 12 enterprises of the region.

Trade union Federation is also involved in the development of culture as a significant contribution to the enrichment of the artistic treasures of Cherkasy region contribute 33 people?s amateur collectives of trade unions. In particular, in the framework of the events dedicated to the 60-anniversary of the region and the 200 anniversary of the birth of T.G. Shevchenko on 20 April 2013 was held the final concert of the best amateur collectives of trade union culture establishments of Cherkasy region, which confirms and for the first time was awarded the rank of ?national amateur collective of trade unions of Ukraine?.

Significant success was achieved by sportsmen societies union of Ukraine?, ?Kolos?, ?Spartak?, who have dozens of well-known athletes. Confirmation of the revival of sports movement, sport collectives became the twentieth Olympics trade unions and the final of the competition ?the sports village of Cherkasy region?.

Trade unions Federation of Cherkasy region in recent years emerged as a separate and independent from the state and political forces Association, maintained the unity of the trade Union members, has achieved some success in ensuring the rights of citizens in the social and labor sphere, but also in the development of the economy of the region.
